As part of the Thesis Defense, doctoral candidates usually have to give a presentation, in which they explain the main points of their research project. This is followed by a discussion with the members of the examination board. The aim of the course is to prepare the participants as well as possible for this situation. On the first day, participants will receive useful tips for their presentation. The focus is on the sensible structure of the presentation and the development of the central arguments. On the typical problems that may arise in the subsequent discussion, e.g.: How do I respond to criticism and “killer questions”? What strategies can I use to deal with difficult questions? Finally, participants who are about to defend their doctoral thesis will be given the opportunity to practise their presentation and simulate the disputation.

In this workshop, you will …

  • learn how to go into your thesis defense well prepared and self-confident.
  • practise giving a convincing and well-structured presentation.
  • be prepared for reacting confidently to difficult questions and objections.
  • become familiar with the general conditions of the disputation.
